The Modern Restoration

Modern Catering is an emerging high growth business branch in our country. The subsector currently represents more than 1.2 % of the GDP, providing jobs for more than 100,000 workers in 5.500 venues.

Below, we shall point out some aspects which come under the subsector heading and will explain their exponential growth in the last two decades in Spain .

Change of habits, the basis of growth

Businesses are becoming more and more complex and dynamic by the day. Citizens lives are changing, and, above all, the ever-increasing absorption of women into the labour market means we have less time for family life. Another factor within the family environment is a break in the passing on of culinary knowledge. Moreover, the pace of life means that citizens have less time to eat.

In catering or gastronomy, this lack of knowledge together with social change has displaced demand from inside the home to Modern Catering. In 2012, it is estimated that 50% of meals will be taken outside the Home.

Our businesses have contributed to improving procedures and making the sector more professional. Moreover, the introduction of technology has improved productivity and efficiency by reducing clients' waiting times. The time factor has also favoured concentrating the Business-Leisure-Catering demand, leading to the appearance of shopping centres where shopping and eating can go hand in hand.

As citizens become better educated they tend to seek factors such as food quality and food safety. The complexity of a multicultural environment opens up the door to new concepts, basically ethnic ones.

All of these factors, as w el l as some others, have boosted the consolidation and growth of the modern catering industry.
